Hotham History
50 million years ago – period of uplift and volcanic activity results in current elevation of the Victorian Alps
1837 – First cattle runs taken up in the Ovens River District
1853 – Baron Sir Ferdinand Von Mueller reports gold in the Oven’s River
1863 – St Bernard’s Hospice provides year round accommodation to passing travellers
1883 – Alpine Road opened between Omeo and Harrietville
1888 – Donald Gow (Jnr) makes first mid winter ascent of Mt Feathertop
1890 – Rail line extended to Bright
1924 – CRB cottage at Hotham Heights made available for skiers use through road maintenance supervisor Bill Spargo
1928 – CRB cottage extended to accommodate 20 visitors and becomes the Hotham Heights Chalet
1933 – Victorian Railways take control of Hotham Heights Chalet from CRB, Bill Spargo appointed Caretaker
1939 – Bushfires destroy Hotham Heights Chalet and St Bernard’s Hospice. Hotham Heights rebuilt to accommodate 28 visitors in time for 1939 ski season
1944 – Alpine Club of Victoria formed and build a lodge at Hotham
1946 – Wangaratta Ski Club lodge built
1947 – Edelweiss Ski Club lodge built
1948 – University Ski Club lodge built
1949 – Second commercial lodge, Drift Chalet built
1952 – First ski lift, a rope tow near present Blue Ribbon Chair
1952 – Last scheduled passenger train to Bright
1955 – Wangaratta Ski Club install Mt St Bernard Rope Tow
1962 – Dept of Crown Lands and Survey assume responsibility for Mt Hotham
Mid 1960’s – Road kept open all year round, previously road not cleared between Slatey Cutting and the Cross
1969 – Playground Chairlift
– Tourist shelter built at Corral Saddle
1973 – Brockoff Poma
1981 – Blue Ribbon Triple Chair
1982 – Very last train to and from Bright
1983 – Alpine Resorts Commission assume responsibility for Mt Hotham
1984 – Arlberg Inn opens
1985 – Dinner Plain established on private freehold land
1987 – Heavenly Quad Chair
1993 – Village Quad Chair
– Completion of sealing road between Harrietville and Hotham
1995 – Roadrunner Quad Chair, Australia Drift T bar
1997 – Gothcha, Keogh’s and The Orchard Chairs
– First Environmental Management Plan produced
1998 – Mt Hotham Alpine Resort Management Board established and assumes control of Hotham
– Completion of sealing of the road from Omeo to Hotham
2000 – Hotham Airport
2004 – Lift company acquired by MFS Limited
